I've been reading Guitar: An American Life by Tim Brookes for the past week after getting it for Christmas. The book chronicles the process of Brookes' first commissioned guitar and alternates chapters about the commission with chapters following the history of the guitar. Brooks mentions a few OLFers, but last night I was reading through the amplification section and came to the following. Nice! "The next step in acoustic guitar technology won't even bother with the pickup, according to Rick Turner, the founder of Renaissance Guitars, as modest, quiet, and articulate a guy as ever mixed sound for the Grateful Dead, and the man who probably knows more about pickups, acoustic and electric, than anyone alive. "No, the future will be something he describes as "an elaborate three- dimensional equalizer" that contains a digital library of sound profiles for the very, very best acoustic guitars and "superimposes the air and wood resonance of a digitized guitar onto the hand and string envelope response coming out of the guitar you're playing." In short, it makes your guitar sound like a Traugott. Or a McAllister. A $10,000 guitar, to put it crudely." |

He also has a piece in this month's Acoustic Guitar Magazine on bridge replacement. |
